The Unmentionables Joins Giving Tuesday to Help Refugees Access Hygienic Products

Austin, TX: 81 percent of refugees do not have consistent access to clean underwear. The importance of undergarments, condoms, and menstrual hygiene products are often overlooked in refugee crises and natural disasters, leaving many displaced persons vulnerable, particularly women and girls. The Unmentionables works to fill that gap, providing dignity through hygiene to refugees around the world. This month, The Unmentionables will be joining forces with the international movement Giving Tuesday; a celebrated day of giving that empowers individuals, communities, and organizations to help others.

"No woman or girl should have to use bits of garbage or old newspapers instead of a menstrual pad, but unfortunately this is the reality for many displaced women living in refugee camps,” Kaleigh Heard, CEO of The Unmentionables, said. “On Giving Tuesday, each donation to The Unmentionables is a gift that helps a person gain access to undergarments, feminine and intimate hygiene products, as well as education and empowerment programs.”

For Giving Tuesday, The Unmentionables suggests the following three simple ways to help refugees:

1. Donate
Give dignity this Giving Tuesday by giving to The Unmentionables. Even gifts of $5 can help to provide a displaced person with hygienic products such as menstrual hygiene products, condoms, or underwear.

2. Share an #UNselfie
This Giving Tuesday, share an #UNselfie. Write why you are donating to The Unmentionables on a piece of paper. Then, hold the paper in front of your face and snap a photo. Finally, share your #UNselfie on social media and tag @_Unmentionables on Twitter, The Unmentionables on Facebook or @Unmentionablesorg on Instagram. Use the hashtag #GiveDignity!

3. Become a Digital Defender
Digital Defenders can spread the word by liking, commenting, and sharing The Unmentionables posts on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with friends and family!
