The island of Chios, a mere four miles off the coast of the Turkish port city of Cesme, is one of the islands hardest hit by the refugee crisis. Currently, over 2,000 refugees are split between the official camp at VIAL Detention Centre, and the unofficial, volunteer-run Souda Camp. Chios serves as The Unmentionables island distribution hub with distributions concentrated at Souda camp.
PARTNERSHIPS & NEEDS ASSESSMENTS
As a drastically underserved refugee community, equity in access to services is essential when distributing goods within the camps. Through our partnerships in Chios we are able to coordinate Unmentionables distributions with existing distribution schedules to ensure all needs are met in a safe, private, and culturally adapted environment.
DISTRIBUTION & INTIMATE EDUCATION
The Unmentionables facilitates distributions to migrants and refugees regardless of asylum status for those living in the Souda Camp, and the most vulnerable migrants placed in nearby hotels in the town of Chios for their safety. Undergarments, feminine hygiene products, and sexual health products are provided by our team using discrete distribution methods with all product purchasing and allocation determined by our pre-distribution needs assessment.
