The Power of Volunteering

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” — Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Volunteering,” the backbone of not-for-profit organizations, is defined as an altruistic activity that helps another person, group, or organization. Volunteering is about finding a mission that resonates with you and working to achieve it. It’s about donating your time, energy, and skills to help create the kind of world you want to live in. It’s about working alongside people who, like you, have decided to be the change.
We live in a world where everyone, everywhere seems to be busy. Time is a limited resource, and we’re all fighting against the clock, trying to maximize every hour of the day. The most common reason people don’t volunteer is because they “don’t have time.” However, I believe that if you’re truly passionate about giving back and have the heart to help, you’ll make the time. I view volunteering as an investment (because yes, you’ll be gaining something). Helping others feels good and is deeply rewarding. By investing your time in a worthy cause, you’ll come away feeling fulfilled and know that your time was better spent than if you’d sat on the couch and binge-watched Netflix.
Besides the fact that helping others sparks joy, there are so many other benefits of volunteering. You never know who you’ll meet or what impact they’ll have on your life. By connecting with diverse groups of people, you’ll gain new perspectives and build bonds that will last a lifetime. You’ll also gain valuable leadership experience that leads to true personal growth. By pairing your passion with a worthy cause, you can develop your skills while being a force for change in the world. Finally, volunteering provides you with a new or strengthened sense of purpose. Whether you’re in a rut, feeling uninspired, or searching for meaning and direction in your life, helping others will also help you.
I make the time to give back because I want to. I’ve always been curious about how I can help change the world for the better, and I’ve seen firsthand how important and rewarding it is to further causes you feel passionately about. Throughout all my volunteer experiences, I’ve gotten back more than I’ve given.
What are you waiting for? If you open your eyes, you’ll see that there are endless opportunities – big or small – to make a difference. At The Unmentionables, we offer volunteer opportunities and internships that directly impact our beneficiaries and create positive change. Whether you wish to lend a hand in the field or from behind a computer, you can have a meaningful impact in the lives of displaced communities.
