Kimora Lee Simmons Donates Her Birthday
Last summer, fashion designer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Kimora Lee Simmons traveled to Houston, Texas with her family to help us distribute intimate hygiene products to those displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Since then, she has been an important part of The Unmentionables’ team and earlier this month, we announced her appointment as our Global Ambassador. Now, with her May 4th birthday fast approaching, she is donating her special day to The Unmentionables and turning it into a party with a purpose. What better way to celebrate than by advancing the intimate health rights of forcibly displaced people?
The UNHCR estimates that in 2016, around half of the refugee population were children under 18. When unaccompanied and with little access to protection and assistance, these young refugees are at increasing risk of exploitation and abuse – approximately 75% of migrant and refugee children trying to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean Sea are vulnerable to these horrors. In Athens in particular, sexual exploitation is visible at a high rate in public parks, squares, and bars. Young male migrants, many of them teenagers, turn to survival sex, prostitution, and are trafficked into the sex trade.
Kimora is unwaveringly committed to furthering The Unmentionables’ impact and protecting those in the displaced community. Instead of asking for presents for her birthday, she is therefore mobilizing her family, friends, and supporters to help her reach her $25,000 fundraiser goal. Your contributions will go toward expanding our protection programs in Greece by helping us provide shelter for those vulnerable to sexual exploitation and trafficking.
Help us celebrate our Global Ambassador on her special day! Share the news with your friends and family, and show Kimora some birthday love by donating to her fundraiser.
